What is lidocaine oral spray or solution?
LIDOCAINE (Xylocaine®) causes loss of feeling in the skin and surrounding tissues. It can numb the skin and mucus membranes of the mouth and throat. Some generic lidocaine products are available.
What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•heart disease or problems other than rhythm and heart rate problems
•myasthenia gravis
•liver disease
•an unusual or allergic reaction to lidocaine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
•pregnant or trying to get pregnant
•breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
Lidocaine is for topical use in the mouth or throat. Do not swallow this medicine unless you have been told to. Follow the directions on the prescription label. If you have a sore place in your mouth, you can apply lidocaine with a cotton-tipped applicator. The solution can be swished around the mouth or gargled, and then spat out. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure the solution. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. If you are using an oral spray, shake well before use; do not inhale the spray. Do not use more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you are using lidocaine at regular intervals and you forget a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with lidocaine?
•beta-blockers, often used for high blood pressure or heart problems
•cimetidine
•cocaine
•bromocriptine
•heart medicine such as digoxin
•medicines for high blood pressure
•medicine for chest pain or angina
•medicines for mental depression
•medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
•medicines for migraine
•medicines to control heart rhythm
•phenytoin
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What side effects may I notice from using lidocaine oral spray or solution?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•swelling of the mouth or throat
Very rare or uncommon:
•anxiety, nervousness
•chest pain, continued irregular heartbeats
•difficulty breathing, wheezing
•dizziness, drowsiness
•headache
•nausea, vomiting
•seizures (convulsions)
•trembling, shaking
•unusual weakness or tiredness
What should I watch for while taking lidocaine?
Be careful to avoid injury while the area is numb from the lidocaine and you are not aware of pain. Do not chew gum or food until the numbness wears off to avoid biting your tongue or cheek and to avoid choking.
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of reach of children.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F); do not freeze.
